Maths Genius Challenge – Gamified Numeracy Reinforcement Activity

An interactive Storyline 360 activity designed to reinforce addition of tens and hundreds using randomised questions, immediate feedback, gamified interactions, and progressive challenge levels.

Project Overview

The Maths Genius Challenge was designed as a gamified reinforcement activity to support numeracy learning following face-to-face classroom instruction. Rather than introducing new concepts, the activity provides learners with an engaging environment to practise addition of tens and hundreds, receive immediate feedback, and build confidence through repetition.

Using a classroom-themed blackboard environment, the activity combines randomised question generation, interactive feedback, and light gamification to transform traditional maths practice into an engaging digital experience.

The Challenge

Following classroom instruction, learners often require repeated practice to strengthen understanding and develop fluency. Traditional worksheets can become repetitive and may not provide immediate feedback or opportunities for self-directed practice.

  • Reinforce classroom learning through independent practice.
  • Provide unlimited opportunities for repetition without becoming monotonous.
  • Deliver immediate feedback to support self-correction.
  • Increase learner motivation through interactive elements and gamification.
  • Assess understanding without creating unnecessary cognitive load.

My Approach

I designed the activity as a digital classroom challenge that follows a gradual progression from guided practice to assessment.

Warm-Up Practice

Learners begin with simple addition questions involving multiples of ten. Questions are generated randomly, ensuring learners encounter a different challenge each time they interact with the activity.

Hundreds Practice

Once learners demonstrate confidence with tens, they progress to adding multiple hundreds together. The activity increases complexity while maintaining a familiar interaction pattern.

Maths Genius Quiz

The final stage presents learners with assessment questions without hints or worked solutions, providing an opportunity to measure retention and understanding following practice.

Key Features

Randomised Question Generation

The activity uses variables and logic within Storyline 360 to generate new number combinations each time the learner attempts a question. This increases replayability, prevents memorisation, and encourages genuine problem-solving.

Immediate Feedback

Learners receive instant confirmation of whether their answer is correct or incorrect. When required, the correct answer is displayed to reinforce learning and support self-correction.

Gamified Interaction Design

  • Blackboard-style interface.
  • Chalkboard number presentation.
  • Animated duster transition effects.
  • Progression through increasingly difficult challenges.
  • Maths Genius achievement messaging.

Outcomes

The Maths Genius Challenge transformed a traditional maths practice exercise into an engaging digital learning experience. By combining randomised question generation, immediate feedback, and simple gamification techniques, the activity encourages learners to practise core numeracy skills repeatedly while maintaining motivation and engagement.
