Personal Learning Pathway (PLP) – Numeracy Assessment

A Storyline 360 numeracy assessment built to identify learner capability, provide progression pathways, and support targeted interventions for apprentices.

Project Overview

The Numeracy Personal Learning Pathway (PLP) was developed alongside the Literacy Pathway as part of a strategic initiative to replace traditional LNAAT assessments and create a more engaging learner support experience for apprentices.

Built in Articulate Storyline 360, the assessment was designed to identify learner numeracy capabilities, provide progression pathways, and supply learner support teams with meaningful performance data to guide targeted interventions.

The solution supported apprentices across construction, scaffolding, roofing, and related trades, ensuring numeracy skills were assessed within practical workplace contexts.

The Challenge

The stakeholder required the assessment to remain aligned with LNAAT numeracy requirements while creating a more engaging and supportive learner experience.

  • Scaffold learners from Level 1 through Level 3 numeracy competencies.
  • Measure practical numeracy skills rather than memorisation.
  • Support multiple question and interaction types.
  • Maintain organisational branding standards.
  • Report learner outcomes into internal systems.
  • Create a consistent learner experience across the wider PLP framework.
  • Ensure workplace relevance through SME-approved content.

My Approach

Working alongside Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), I developed assessment content that reflected practical trade-based applications of numeracy commonly encountered within construction, scaffolding, roofing, and workplace safety environments.

The assessment was designed around a progressive pathway structure where learners moved through increasingly complex numeracy activities. Rather than relying solely on traditional quiz questions, I incorporated multiple interactive assessment methods.

  • Drag-and-drop activities.
  • Ordering and sequencing tasks.
  • Multiple-choice questions.
  • True or false questions.
  • Workplace problem-solving scenarios.

A calculator was permitted where appropriate to focus assessment on practical application and reasoning rather than mental arithmetic alone.
